However, to expedite the process of <em>digital file to print<\/em> we prefer files come as print-ready PDF documents. PDF (portable document format) files are standardized, are easy and free to create and will help you share documents with nearly everyone in the print industry. They preserve fonts, embedded images, vector graphics and more, giving you exactly what you see on screen. <strong>PDFs work for word documents, publisher documents, Autocad drawings and nearly everything that is printable.<\/strong> This guide is intended to help customers of Kalispell Copy Center learn the basics of creating PDFs. Scale is often a problem when draftsmen\/architects\/engineers get their files printed. Creating PDFs will help eliminate this issue by putting the control over the scale and page size in your hands.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kalcopy.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/autocad.png\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<small>Your Autocad Print Dialog may differ from this image but key elements should still be present.<\/small><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Choose CutePDF Writer from the Plotter Name Field<\/li>\n<li>Choose the appropriate paper size (in this case Architectural D)<\/li>\n<li>Select the proper scale for your document.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you are not using layouts you may also have to choose your plot area specifically by choosing <em>Window<\/em> from <em>What to plot<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The exact process will very depending on which CAD software you are using. \u00a0If you are looking for a software to view DWG and other CAD files we recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/dwg\/viewers\">AutoDesk&#8217;s\u00a0DWG TrueView<\/a>\u00a0free CAD viewer. \u00a0This software and the above method is what we use to convert DWG files to PDF for printing.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle admin_label=&#8221;indesign&#8221; title=&#8221;Adobe InDesign&#8221; open=&#8221;off&#8221; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; border_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221; module_id=&#8221;indesign&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>While we have no problems using Adobe InDesign files, we will often run into issues with missing links and fonts. \u00a0To avoid these problems it is best to export InDesign documents to PDF files before sending to us for printing.<\/p>\n<p>PDF creating options are found under File &gt; Export. \u00a0For more information <a href=\"https:\/\/helpx.adobe.com\/indesign\/using\/exporting-publishing-pdf.html\">Adobe has a comprehensive help article on the topic.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If a document<strong> must<\/strong> be sent as an InDesign file, please Package (File&gt;Package) the InDesign file first so all Links and Fonts will be included. \u00a0For more information on Packaging InDesign files <a href=\"https:\/\/helpx.adobe.com\/indesign\/how-to\/indesign-package-files-for-handoff.html\">visit Adobe&#8217;s help files.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Any raster are elements should be a\u00a0minimum resolution of 300dpi for best results. For more information visit our <a href=\"http:\/\/kalcopy.com\/wp\/helpful-information\/artwork-guidelines\/\">Artwork &amp; File Guidelines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle admin_label=&#8221;photoshop&#8221; title=&#8221;Adobe Photoshop&#8221; open=&#8221;off&#8221; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; border_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221; module_id=&#8221;photoshop&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>While we have no problems using Adobe Photoshop\u00a0files, we will often run into issues with missing fonts or effects not rendering correctly from one version to another. \u00a0To avoid these problems it is best to save\u00a0Photoshop\u00a0documents to PDF files before sending to us for printing.<\/p>\n<p>Photoshop\u00a0natively supports saving to PDF files. \u00a0Chose File &gt; Save As, then select PDF as your file type. \u00a0Click Save. \u00a0A second window will pop-up giving you additional options for your PDF file.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a large format (Poster, Banner, Signs) project it may be better to save your document as a TIFF file. \u00a0Chose File &gt; Save As, then select TIFF as your file type, and un-check Layers. \u00a0A second window will pop-up giving you additional options for your TIFF file. \u00a0Make sure Layers is set to None. \u00a0This will give a much smaller and easier to handle TIFF file.<\/p>\n<p>If your document <strong>must<\/strong> be sent as an Photoshop\u00a0file please rasterize\u00a0all font layers or include any specialized fonts you used.<\/p>\n<p>Please build any Photoshop files at a\u00a0minimum resolution of 300dpi for best results, and if possible at the finished size they should be printed. For users of these systems, simply print to your <em>PDF Printer<\/em>, or variants thereof.<\/p><h1 id=\"writer\">1.0: Download the PDF Writer<\/h1><p><a href=\"#top\">Back To Top<\/a><\/p><p>To create PDF files from your Windows PC, you will first need an extra piece of software. (please skip this step if you already have a PDF creator such as Adobe Acrobat or PDFCreator) Kalispell Copy Center recommends the free <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cutepdf.com\/Products\/CutePDF\/writer.asp\">CutePDF Writer<\/a>. CutePDF Writer comes in two files which must be downloaded and installed: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cutepdf.com\/download\/CuteWriter.exe\">Download 1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cutepdf.com\/download\/converter.exe\">Download 2<\/a>. Once you have downloaded and installed both these files, continue to Step 2.<\/p><h1 id=\"create\">2.0: Creating PDF Files<\/h1><p><a href=\"#top\">Back To Top<\/a><\/p><p>Now that we have CutePDF installed, creating PDF files is as easy as printing to a printer. This is often\u00a0referred\u00a0to as \"Printing to a PDF\". \u00a0If you don't see your application listed under the\u00a0<strong>Application specific <\/strong>section, this is the method you want to use. Scale is often a problem when draftsmen\/architects\/engineers get their files printed.
